I was headed towards New World when I bumped into him - and he suggested I visit the weekend markets for some affordable grocery shopping.
So the very next day I made sure to wakeup/getout of the apartment before noon to visit the market (and see what the fuss was all about - they even have a website!)
I took the harbour route directly from Taranaki Street, near the Te Papa museum landmark that Michael (the taxi driver) mentioned.
What a gorgeous husky. The weather was sunny yet chilly so both the husky and myself can't complain too much. I love dogs!
'twas a gorgeous Sunday at Wellington weather-wise. You can prolly get a few drops of sweat on your brow if you run a short distance (in my case, a 1km sprint to work to avoid being late). Everybody's out on Sunday to play with their kids, play with their dogs, play with skateboards or just snapping photos just like myself (albeit more equipped with DSLRs).
Entering the marketplace
There were mostly stalls with vegetables and fruits, mostly operated by Asians. They all seem to sell the same stuff! Oversized bellpeppers, pruny red figs, humongous sticks of celery (I neglected to buy even half as it wouldn't fit my fridge), Chilean grapes, among the many other things on parade. Not much of variety/competition in this respect, plus the prices were roughly about the same.
What caught my eye were the ready-to-eat food stalls. I had my lunch at one stall that served a lamb pita-burger meal for $3.50. Not bad aye! (there's some NZ accent for yer). Before that, I sampled a marvelous cup of warm lemon ginger honey juice.
Peanut butter stall looked tempting but I was on a budget for the day...
After some standard grocery shopping, I wandered out of the market to gobble my 2nd lunch from Santo Churros, Chicken flautas (shaped like a flute).
Managed to block out most of the sun with this pic!
According to my taxi-driver friend, the opening hours for the Harbourside Market was from 7am-1pm, but stalls were still open after that, perhaps with the hope that they can sell out their stock. I circled the market one or two times before deciding to depart for New World (well, I can't get everything from the morning market and that includes spaghetti sauce and cereals :P)
Dissipating crowd
Leftover for latecomers
Till next weekend!
