My hostel is located at the corner or Mercury Lane and Karangahape Road (referred to as K-road by the locals), and while there's not much to talk about Mercury Lane (well, it is after all just a lane), I can maybe string a paragraph or two about the latter.
Well, here goes.
It used to be a red-light district.
Or rather, just a red-light road.
I could look up all the fabulously explicit details on the internet, but that wouldn't be as fun as being totally clueless and walking right into a strip club without knowing you're stepping into one.
Leon: I see that you got SkyTV! You showing the world cup games? You serve coffee?
Bartender: This ayesa strip club. wey got other cups 'round heyre. Mostly D-cups, ey.
Leon: Oh.
I get most of my necessities on K-road: the grocery store is just a few steps from the hostel. I am a grocery store addict. I shop for provisions almost every day - whether it be for mushrooms, bread, tupperwares, fruits or snacks. I'm fairly spoilt here 'cos it's an Asian store so I even get Milo here!
Oockland embraces the Asians, that much I can tell for now!
Oh yeah I was suppose to blabber on about the other stuff I get here. There's pharmacies with skin-friendly products, cafes, drinking spots, all the bank branches, bus stops, flight booking center, healthy looking strays/beggars
< wanted to snap a photo of one of them but no luck thus far. I don't wanna get beat up within my first month here. So just trust me when I say these strays/beggars look well-fed >
and of course,
Convenience stores. They're everywhere! With all sorts of names. No 7-E franchises in Auckland, for real. They sell Playboy mags here too.
This is a first for me - Gay Times:
Mighty liberal! Actually found that copy at the library.
Alright, that's my shoutout for K-Road.
Ciao
